“TEHRAN — With the aftershocks of the disputed presidential elections showing no signs of abating, reformers are calling for a referendum on the legitimacy of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government.

“The only way out of the current situation is to hold a referendum,” former president Mohamed Khatami has proposed.

“People should be asked whether they are happy with the current situation.

“If the vast majority of people are happy with the current situation, we will accept it as well.”

Iran has been boiling since last month’s presidential vote which saw incumbent Ahmadinejad re-elected in landslide.

Defeated rival Mir Hossein Mousavi refused to acknowledge the results, sparking massive protests across the country in which at least 20 people were killed and hundreds arrested.

Children of Revolution

by Diana Ameen
July 11th, 2009

Most of people in and outside of Iran are still trying to figure out what happened there in last few weeks. Some people believe this whole thing was an initiative of the US and her allies that miserably failed.  Meanwhile, others think that there is a genuine resentment among the Iranian people in respect to the current system. These people believe Iranian public is fed up with how things are going, and are in need for a change. Well, there are certainly feelings of anger and bitterness among the Iranian public¬– especially among the youth– but foreign countries also took advantage of the situation and were almost successful in kindling another revolution. Now set aside any bias you might have and lets try to put the pieces together to get a sense of really what happened. To truly analyze the situation in Iran we need to understand the political structure …

Where is Iran heading?

June 24th, 2009

Are we witnessing another revolution? Is history repeating itself? Is clerical rule has come to a circle? These and many other questions being asked by many. The protesters themselves are not sure of their near future.  They don’t know were they are going or what they are going for, but they seem to be sure that they don’t want the current regime.

Do these protests speak on behalf of the majority of Iranian population or is it just the western propaganda that is amplifying the crisis? On one side the western media is accusing Iran for its oppression of peaceful protesters, while on the other side Iran’s supreme leader khamenei is accusing the United State, Briton, and Israel of fueling riots in Iran.

On a separate note the Iranian interior minister has accused Washington, London, and Tel Aviv of direct and indirectly supporting different terrorist groups to …

TEHRAN — Siding with declared winner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Friday, June 19, for an end to streets protests over last week’s disputed presidential elections.

“The people have chosen whom they wanted,” Khamenei said in his Friday prayers sermon in Tehran, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“I see some people more suitable for serving the country than others but the people made their choice,” he added to the cheers of the massed worshippers who included Ahmadinejad.

“The result of the election comes from the ballot box, not from the street,” he said. “Today the Iranian nation needs calm.”

Iran fell into turmoil since last week’s presidential elections, which incumbent Ahmadinejad won in landslide.

Reformist rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi challenged the election results and led daily protests that left at least seven people dead.

Khamenei insisted that despite some vote violations registered by the three defeated candidates with …
